1920 - Evil Returns Movie Review

1920 - Evil Returns is a 2012 Hindi horror film directed by Bhushan Patel and written by Vikram Bhatt and Amin Hajee. It is a sequel to the 2008 film 1920, although the story is not connected. The film stars Aftab Shivdasani, Tia Bajpai, Vidya Malvade and Sharad Kelkar in the lead roles.

The plot revolves around a poet named Jaidev Varma (Aftab Shivdasani) who falls in love with a fan named Smriti (Tia Bajpai) whom he has never met. When they finally meet, he discovers that she is possessed by an evil spirit who wants to claim her soul. He decides to save her from the clutches of the demon with the help of his friend Karan (Vidya Malvade) and a mysterious exorcist (Sharad Kelkar).

What's Good

  • The film has some well-executed scenes that create a spooky atmosphere and scare the audience. The cinematography and the locations are impressive and add to the horror quotient.

  • The film has a decent soundtrack by Chirantan Bhatt that includes some melodious songs like "Uska Hi Banana", "Apna Mujhe Tu Laga" and "Jaavedaan Hai". The songs also suit the mood and the theme of the film.

  • Tia Bajpai delivers a commendable performance as the tormented Smriti who undergoes various transformations due to the possession. She portrays the fear, pain and vulnerability of her character convincingly.

What's Bad

  • The film suffers from a weak and predictable storyline that offers nothing new or original. The film borrows heavily from other horror films like The Exorcist, The Omen, The Ring and even its own predecessor 1920. The film lacks logic and coherence in many places and fails to explain the motive and origin of the evil spirit.

  • The film relies too much on loud and jarring sounds to create an impact rather than genuine scares. The background score is repetitive and annoying and often drowns out the dialogues.

  • The performances of Aftab Shivdasani, Vidya Malvade and Sharad Kelkar are mediocre and uninspiring. They fail to evoke any sympathy or interest for their characters. Aftab Shivdasani looks bored and wooden throughout the film. Vidya Malvade has nothing much to do except being a supportive friend. Sharad Kelkar tries to be mysterious and intense but ends up being hammy and over-the-top.

1920 - Evil Returns is a disappointing horror film that fails to live up to the expectations of the fans of the genre. It is a formulaic and clichéd film that offers nothing new or exciting. It is a waste of time and money for the viewers who are looking for a good scare.
